Windows Media DRM cracked again
Microsoft's Windows Media DRM (Digital Rights Management) has been cracked yet again. This time all DRM protection on Windows Media versions up to version 11.0.6000.6324 can be unlocked using a simple set of utilities available freely on the internet since July 13, 2007.
FairUse4WM, the program that unlocked the DRM protection for music purchased off the internet has all but become obsolete since the new versions of Windows Media Player had launched. The latest version released by Divine Tao on doom9 forums unlocks Windows Media DRM copy protected music on even the latest versions of Windows Media Player so far.
Removing the DRM form music bought online has always been a hot topic. The relevant posts on the Doom9 forum have collectively seen over 1300 posts so far.
Digital Rights Management, or DRM as it is called, has been under constant debate since quite some time now. The Music Industry and software vendors have been in favor of DRM, while the consumers have mostly been against it.
Apple's chief, Steve Jobs, started calling for an end to digital music locking earlier this year. Apple's iTunes store started selling DRM-free music from EMI Group PLC's catalog in May. Amazon.com will also sell music in unprotected MP3 format on its much awaited online music store.
