According to Brian Foster, senior director of product management with Symantec's end point security group, "This is the next major version of the code base." "With this release, we're really focused on changing the game for anti-virus." In addition to performance improvements, Hamlet would be easier to use and to manage, says Foster.
Hamlet includes code from two recent Symantec acquisitions. It offers firewall capabilities based on the Sygate Enterprise Protection software, which Symantec acquired in 2005. It also includes SONAR, (Symantec Online Network for Advanced Response), based on code that Symantec acquired as part of its 2005 purchase of Whole Security.
Hamlet, which rumors indicate will be named Symantec Endpoint Protection is scheduled to become available later this year. The product is slated to be exhibited in the upcoming Symantec Vision 2007, to be held at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada on June 12 to 14, 2007.
